It’s winter, why am I still seeing ants on my property!? We hear this time and again and have an explanation for you!

Fire ants are usually less active during the dry winter months, but you may see mounds reforming following winter rains or days over 70 degrees. With the unseasonably warm winter we have had, ants are taking advantage of solar radiation from the concrete and moisture from irrigation run-off.

Treating mounds with an insecticide like Top Choice during the winter is the most effective method to rid them from your property. Bait products are not recommended due to the fact that ants are not foraging for food. An insecticide needs to be applied evenly at two pounds per every 1000 square feet, and must be applied by a licensed applicator.
